My husband just passed away, and i have been getting everything transferred over, financial assets in my name etc. it has been a headache. my husband and I never carried a balance on a credit card, we have over 50k in open availability, but have never paid a dime in interest because we pay it off on time, in full every month. a couple of weeks ago I received a letter from a collection company for 225.00, it was for a JC Penney credit card through synchrony bank. I have not used this card in a long time, but my husband has been sick and things have been hectic, so I called to see what it was and make sure I didn’t overlook something. Well, the lady that answered the phone, could not tell me what the charges were for, I argued about the fact the card had not been used and all the sudden she was able to see that I had made a payment in 2011 for 79.00, I remembered it was for swim suits. It paid off card, and she acknowledged that. I ask what the 225.00 was for, she said in the fine print, they can charge a closing fee, for closing your account, and the 225.00 was for The closing fee and the interest on the closing fee, I never closed the account, she said it was for closing and interest? and by the way, I always received the bill with no worries from them until 2011, somehow the address got crossed and it was being sent to 2280, instead of 2281. We moved from 2281 to a new address 6 months ago, thank goodness for a good postal worker that caught it a forwarded to us. JC pennys appears to be in financial distress and trying to make money on a widow that just lost her husband of 42 yrs. I will never step foot in there stores again, and will tell everybody i know about my experience.
